Lafayette QB has big shoes to fill

There's nothing given in life, and Josh Edison is proof. But if there's one name next season in Acadiana area high school football Wholesale Jerseys you must become aware of, it's his.

Over the last four years, the names of quarterbacks at Lafayette High have been prominent. One that comes to mind is Michael McIver; another is Blake Barousse.

This season, the name fans will come to know is Edison. He's the Mighty Lions' next great one.

"Well, we'll see about that one," Edison laughed. "All I know is I've waited a long time for the opportunity to be the starting quarterback. This is my one shot and I don't plan on wasting it."

Looking back

Since 2000, Lafayette's been to the state playoffs four times. McIver was behind center in 2003 and '04, while Barousse broke through a year ago. The stays, though, were short.

McIver and the Mighty NFL Jerseys 2015 Lions went out in the first round in '03, losing to West Monroe, 28 21. The next season Airline stopped the team's run in the second round by a 28 13 margin.

In his two seasons as the starter, Barousse led Lafayette to the playoffs in '06, losing to East St. John, 42 19, in the second round.

"We're real close to taking that next step," said Mighty Lions coach Mark Barousse. "We've been to the second round two out of the last three years, but we want to get over the hump.

"A lot of that will be determined with leadership and how hard we work in the summer, and hopefully Josh is the guy that can get that done for us."

The shoes

For Lafayette to finally enjoy a deep playoff run, the play of Edison in his senior year will be crucial. And everyone associated with the program acknowledges as much.

Here's why:

Physically gifted with a 6 foot 2, 215 pound frame and an electric right arm, Edison has appeared just sparingly in Cheap NFL Jerseys a couple of varsity games. Obviously, experience is a concern.

But more than that is the pressure.

Edison has huge shoes to fill following Barousse. Last season's state Class 5A offensive player of the year, the Arkansas Monticello signee completed 124 of 181 passes for 2,029 yards and 20 touchdowns. Barousse added 677 yards rushing and 14 more scores on the ground.

"Blake was a good quarterback, but I can only do the best I can," Edison said. "So is there pressure? But momentum is there to be capitalized on.

At midseason in 2006, Lafayette was just 2 3 following a 49 21 loss against Carencro. But then the team caught fire.

In Week 6, the Mighty Lions stopped eventual state champion Arcadiana (21 14) and won four of their next five games. The loss was a 49 34 shootout with Sulphur, which lost in the Class 5A state final to Arcadiana.
